VW error codes, also known as OBD-II error codes, play a central role in diagnosing and solving technical problems in Volkswagen vehicles. These codes are standardized identification codes that identify specific abnormalities in a vehicle’s operation, thereby serving as important guidelines for accurate diagnoses by professionals.
Within the Volkswagen model range, there are certain models where error codes can occur more frequently. These include models such as the VW Golf, the VW Passat and the VW Jetta. These models, due to their advanced electronics and sophisticated systems, show an increased propensity for error codes.
For example, a common error code on these models is P0420, which can indicate possible problems with the catalytic converter. Another common code is P0171, which can indicate a lean fuel-air mixture in one or more cylinders.
To access VW trouble codes, a diagnostic device such as an OBD-II scanner is used. This device makes it possible to read and interpret the error codes from the vehicle’s on-board diagnostic system. A thorough understanding of these codes is critical to making accurate diagnoses and making necessary repairs.
The first character in the fault code, indicated by a letter, makes it possible to determine which system the problem relates to:
- P – problems with the operation of the transmission (automatic transmission) or power units;
- B – malfunctions in the operation of body components – airbags (Airbag), power windows, door locks, etc.;
- C – problems with the running gear or chassis;
- U – problems with electronic modules or digital data buses.
The second character indicates the standardity or specificity of the problem:
- 0 – general code for OBD2 output;
- 1 and 2 – personal codes of the Volkswagen manufacturer;
- 3 – reserved parameter.
The third character determines the type of problem:
- 1 and 2 – fuel or air supply system, as well as additional reduction of exhaust gas toxicity;
- 3 – ignition unit, also indicates misfire in the cylinders;
- 4 – additional emission control system;
- 5 – vehicle speed and idle speed system;
- 6 – electronic control modules and adjacent electrical circuits;
- 7, 8 – errors of the transmission unit.
The fourth and fifth characters are a number that corresponds to the error number in the OBD system.

How to diagnose the error?
Instead of a computer, you can diagnose a car with a phone; you must first install the appropriate program on the mobile gadget.
Testing using a laptop or smartphone is performed as follows:
- A wire with an adapter is connected to the OBD2 connector. The second end of the cable must be connected to the USB output of the computer. If you are using a telephone, you should establish a connection via Bluetooth wireless channel.
- The verification program is launched on the computer.
- Testing begins. The utility should check all components and display Volkswagen error codes on the screen. Depending on the program, the user can specify individual systems for diagnostics.
- The resulting combinations of problems are deciphered, after which the car is repaired.
Self-diagnosis is performed as follows:
- The heating unit in the car is turned off, after which the ignition system is deactivated.
- The user simultaneously presses the fan economy mode and air recirculation buttons. These controls must be held for three seconds.
- The ignition is activated, the keys are not released. The vehicle control unit will turn on the self-diagnosis mode, as a result of which the fan will automatically operate at each power level. A fault combination should appear on the display located on the on-board panel.
- To go to the next error code, use the heater air temperature increase button. If the combination 000 appears on the screen, this indicates that the list of problems has been completed to the end.
How to reset the error?
It is necessary to reset the combinations after all faults have been removed. Erasing codes without eliminating errors will result in the problem remaining, but information about it will be deleted from the control unit’s memory.
To display combinations after self-diagnosis, perform the following steps:
- After reading the errors, the economy mode key for the heating unit is pressed. The button is held down for three seconds.
- If the combinations are deleted, code 444 will appear on the screen.
- Press the Eco mode button again to exit the self-diagnosis menu.
If a tester was used for testing, removal is performed as follows:
- After reading the codes, the ignition is turned off in the car. There is no need to disconnect the wire from the scanner or adapter.
- The contact closure key on the device is pressed.
- The ignition is activated. After 5 seconds the contact elements open.
- The ignition in the car turns off. All combinations of faults will be deleted from memory.
